Radiant Joy
“Those who look to Him for help will be radiant with joy; no shadow of shame will darken their faces.” — Psalms 34:5 (NLT)
Where you look determines how you look.
If you stare constantly into the abyss of anxiety, the news cycle, the criticisms of others, or your own past failures, your countenance will eventually reflect the darkness of those things. It will carve shadows into your mind and your expression.
But David, a man intimately acquainted with running for his life in absolute disgrace and fear, discovered a profound law of spiritual physics: Looking to God alters you physically and spiritually.
The Radiant Face
The Hebrew word used here for "radiant" (nahar) means to sparkle, to be cheerful, to flow together. It's the same word used for a river flowing with water. When we look to the Lord for help, there is a flowing rush of joy and relief that literally illuminates the face. Think of Moses coming down from the mountain; his face shone because he had been looking at God.
When we turn our faces toward the light of God’s grace and provision, the shadows are forced to fall behind us.
No Shadow of Shame
Shame thrives in the dark. It covers our faces. It makes us want to look down and hide. Shame tells you that you are fundamentally flawed, unwanted, and unprotected.
But God’s promise in Psalm 34 is that when you look to Him, shame loses its grip. The light of His acceptance is so brilliant that "no shadow of shame" can darken your face. You are invited to lift your head, unashamed, fully known, and deeply loved, radiating the joy of a rescued child of God.
