Cutting Through the Swarm

“All the nations surrounded me, but in the name of the Lord I cut them down. They surrounded me on every side, but in the name of the Lord I cut them down. They swarmed around me like bees, but they were consumed as quickly as burning thorns; in the name of the Lord I cut them down.” — Psalms 118:10-12 (NIV)

There is a specific kind of panic that sets in when you are surrounded. The feeling of claustrophobia, where every direction you turn presents a new threat, is paralyzing.

In Psalm 118, the psalmist paints a terrifying, chaotic picture: “They swarmed around me like bees.” Anyone who has accidentally disturbed a hornet's nest knows this terror. You can't fight a swarm with a sword. There are too many of them. They are too fast, too erratic, and they sting from every angle.

The Name of the Lord

Notice the repetitive rhythm in these verses. Three times the threat is stated (surrounded, surrounded on every side, swarmed like bees). And three times, the exact same response is given: “In the name of the Lord I cut them down.”

When you are fighting a swarm—whether it's a swarm of financial problems, a swarm of anxieties, a swarm of physical ailments, or literal enemies—you cannot fight them individually. The sheer volume will exhaust you.

Your only defense against a swarm is the Name of the Lord. The Name of the Lord represents His authority, His character, and His undeniable power.

Burning Thorns

The psalmist shifts the imagery from bees to burning thorns. Thorns catch fire incredibly fast. They flare up with a massive burst of heat and light, but because there is no substance to them, they burn out almost instantly, leaving nothing but ash.

The threats surrounding you right now might feel loud, hot, and overwhelming. But in the grand scheme of God's authority, they are like burning thorns. The flame will die out quickly. The name of the Lord is a fortress that will outlast the fire and outlast the swarm.
