Equipped for the Heights
“It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he causes me to stand on the heights. He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze.” — Psalm 18:32-34
David was a warrior, intimately familiar with the brutal realities of ancient combat and the unforgiving terrain of the Judean wilderness. In Psalm 18, he reflects on a lifetime of miraculous escapes and stunning victories. He doesn’t attribute his survival to his own grit; he traces it all back to the equipping of God.
Feet Like a Deer
The terrain David often fled through was filled with sheer cliffs and treacherous crags. One wrong step meant death. He writes that God gave him the feet of a deer (or a hind/gazelle). These animals are uniquely designed to navigate jagged, vertical rocks with absolute precision and balance.
God doesn't always remove the treacherous path or the dizzying heights from our lives. Instead, He changes us. He makes us surefooted in dangerous places. He grants us stability when everything around us is unstable.
Bending the Bow of Bronze
A bow of bronze was an incredibly powerful weapon that required immense upper-body strength to string and draw. It was unyielding.
When David says God trains his hands for battle so his arms can bend a bow of bronze, he is saying that God develops in us a capacity that transcends our natural limitations. You may face obstacles right now that feel completely unyielding—like trying to bend solid bronze. Yet, it is in the process of the battle that God trains you, building your spiritual musculature.
God is arming you with strength. He is securing your way. You are equipped for the heights.
