The Geography of Joy: Psalm 16:11

"In Your presence is the fullness of joy" – Psalm 16:11

We spend billions of dollars and countless hours trying to extract joy from our circumstances. We look for it in achievements, relationships, vacations, and new purchases. But Psalm 16:11 gives us the exact geographical coordinates of true, unadulterated joy. It is not found in a what; it is found in a where and a who.

The Myth of Partial Joy

When we seek joy outside of God’s presence, we only ever find 'partial' joy. It is fleeting, dependent on our mood, our health, or our bank account. It leaks. But the Psalmist uses the word "fullness" (saba in Hebrew), which means satiation, being filled to the absolute brim so that nothing else can fit.

Presence as a Location

"In Your presence." Joy is a byproduct of proximity. You cannot manufacture the warmth of the sun while standing in a dark basement; you have to step into the light. Similarly, you cannot manufacture spiritual joy while disconnected from the Spirit.

If you feel empty today, the solution is not necessarily to change your circumstances. The solution is to change your proximity. Draw near to Him, and let the fullness of His presence crowd out the emptiness of your anxieties.
