The God Who Carries

“Even to your old age and gray hairs I am He, I am He who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.” — Isaiah 46:4 (NIV)

Our world values youth, independence, and raw stamina. There is an unspoken fear in many of us that as we age—as our strength wanes, our memories blur, and our bodies betray us—we will become obsolete, abandoned, or burdensome.

Isaiah 46 addresses this deepest human vulnerability with one of the most tender promises in Scripture. God draws a massive contrast between the idols of Babylon, which had to be strapped to carts and carried by exhausted beasts of burden (Isaiah 46:1-2), and Himself.

Idols are things you have to carry. The true God is the one who carries you.

Even to Your Old Age

God says, "I am He." He is the same God who knit you together in your mother's womb, the same God who sustained you through the turbulent years of your youth, and the same God who will hold you when your hair turns gray. His commitment to you does not have an expiration date. His grace is not tied to your productivity or your physical stamina.

Made, Carried, Sustained, Rescued

Notice the sequence of verbs:

  • I have made you: He takes absolute ownership and responsibility for your existence.
  • I will carry you: When you have no strength left to walk, He provides the locomotion.
  • I will sustain you: He provides the daily, necessary nourishment and grace to keep your spirit alive.
  • I will rescue you: When the final threat comes, He is the ultimate deliverer.

You do not have to carry the weight of your own survival. You are carried by the One who made you.
