The Paradox of Weakness: 2 Corinthians 12:9
"But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me." – 2 Corinthians 12:9
There is perhaps no verse more contradictory to human logic than 2 Corinthians 12:9. We spend our lives hiding our flaws, bolstering our resumes, and projecting strength. We believe that God can use us despite our weaknesses. But Jesus tells Paul something radically different: God’s power is actually brought to completion in our weakness.
The Sufficiency of Grace
Paul pleaded for a "thorn in the flesh" to be removed. He wanted comfort; Jesus gave him grace. We often think of grace merely as forgiveness for sin, but here, grace is the active, sustaining energy of God in the midst of ongoing affliction. It is "sufficient." It doesn't mean the pain goes away; it means you will have exactly what you need to survive it and thrive within it.
Power Perfected
"My power is made perfect..." The Greek word for perfect here means 'brought to its intended goal' or 'completed.' If you are completely strong, self-reliant, and capable, there is no empty space for Christ’s power to fill. Your weakness is not a liability to God; it is the necessary prerequisite for His miraculous intervention. The crack in the vessel is what allows the light to shine through.
Boasting in Brokenness
Because of this revelation, Paul changes his tune. He stops begging for the thorn to be removed and starts boasting about his inability. Why? Because every limitation he has becomes a landing pad for the power of Christ. Stop apologizing for your limitations. Hand them over to God and watch Him do His best work.
