When the Battle Chooses You

2 Chronicles 20:17, 22-25 (NIV)
“You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the LORD will give you…. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the LORD will be with you.”
(...)
As they began to sing and praise, the Lord set ambushes against the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir... and they were defeated... There was so much plunder that it took three days to collect it.

Sometimes, you don't go looking for a fight; the fight comes to your front door. One day, King Jehoshaphat of Judah woke up and found himself surrounded by a massive coalition of three armies (Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir). He was outnumbered and did not have any physical options.

When he sought the Lord, the response was one of the most counterintuitive battle strategies in recorded history. Go, but do not fight.

The Paradox of Position

God told the army of Judah to "Take up your positions" and "stand firm." Normally, taking a position implies bracing for violent impact. You take a position to draw your sword, to raise your shield against incoming arrows. But God explicitly told them, "You will not have to fight this battle."

Instead of sending their elite swordsmen to the front lines, Jehoshaphat sent the choir.

Praise as a Weapon

Verse 22 says, "As they began to sing and praise, the Lord set ambushes." Their worship was the trigger for divine intervention. They didn't praise God after the victory; they praised Him in the face of certain death. Their song confused the enemy so deeply that the three opposing armies turned on each other and completely annihilated themselves.

When Judah finally reached the overlook to view the battlefield, all they saw were fallen enemies. They didn't have to swing a single sword. Instead, they spent three days collecting the plunder left behind by the very forces that meant to destroy them.

Our Strategy for Overwhelming Odds

When a massive battle chooses us—whether it's a health crisis, a financial ruin, or a relational breakdown—our natural instinct is to panic or to try and fight it with earthly weapons.

The strategy of 2 Chronicles 20 is clear:

  1. Show up. (Take your positions). Don't run from the problem.
  2. Do not swing. (You will not have to fight). Release control to God.
  3. Sing. (Begin to praise). Let worship be your warfare.

Let God guide the strategy. Our job is to observe and follow.
